Edward Weniger’s alleged abuse of nonprofit Local Liberty

On October 25, 2024, a formal complaint was submitted to the NE Attorney General’s office against Edward Weniger and his nonprofit organization Local Liberty for alleged “abuse of nonprofit status and potential violations of the Nebraska Nonprofit Corporation Act.”

The complaint was based on a 2023 biennial report filed by Local Liberty in which concerning irregularities were discovered, including “inadequate board governance, improper use of mailing addresses, and potential conflicts of interest.” The complainant suggested the statutes in question are intended to “ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance within Nebraska nonprofits,” and highlighted the potential for misuse of the nonprofit’s assets due to the lack of appropriate structure and failure to provide accurate information.

Since Edward listed himself for every director position when Nebraska law requires at least 3 individuals, and there doesn’t appear to be any indication of its financial position, it begs the question: what kind of scheme is Edward Weniger running with this nonprofit that doesn’t appear to comply with NE law?

We need our school board to remain ethically sound and financially responsible, but Edward Weniger has already demonstrated he cannot be trusted to responsibly manage his own tax-exempt organization, much less a public institution that is directly funded with our tax dollars.
